Description

History

The Museum of Art Nouveau and Art Déco was inaugurated on April 6th, 1995. It soon became one of the most frequented museums in Castile and Leon, with an average of 120,000 visitors every year.

For the last ten years, the Museum and its patron Manuel Ramos Andrade have received numerous awards in gratitude for their commitment towards culture and tourism. Most noteworthy are the following: the Paul Harris Fellow and Blasón de Turismo de Castilla y León, in 1996; the Máster de Popularidad, in 1997; and the City Gold Medal, in 1998.

Among its many distinguished visitors, His Royal Highness Felipe de Borbón y Grecia visited the Museum in May 1997. During the 15th Ibero-American Summit of Heads of State and Government held in Salamanca in October 2005, Her Royal Highness Queen Sofía and the First Ladies of the countries participating in the Summit made a private visit to the Museum.

The illustrious visitors admired the collections of chryselephantines and dolls of the Manuel Ramos Andrade Foundation and notably paid closer attention to the jewels and scent bottles. The First Ladies took numerous photographs of the building during their visit.

The Building

The Casa Lis, commissioned by Miguel de Lis at the beginning of the 20th century, is a small palace designed by the Architect, JoaquínVargas. It houses the collections of the Manuel Ramos Andrade Foundation.

The patron

Born in 1944 in Navasfrías, a small town in the province of Salamanca near the Portuguese border, Manuel Ramos Andrade devoted most of his life to gather a coherent and rigorous collection guided by his intuition and intelligence. After traveling around the world during the 1960s and 1970s, he settled in Barcelona as an antique dealer and amassed a great collection, which he would later donate to his hometown, Salamanca. The Foundation which takes his name is responsible for the financial management of the Museum. It is also committed to carry on Andrade´s work in helping the community of Navasfrías: issuing study grants to the young and collaborating in projects which aim to help the elderly population.

Whilst having several owners over the years, the building has been used for a variety of purposes. Most recently in the 1990s, it was transformed into a Museum to exhibit the collections of Manuel Ramos Andrade, an antique dealer from Salamanca. Two architects from Salamanca, Javier Gómez Riesco and Francisco Morón, undertook the renovation of the building, in whose restoration and decoration Ramos Andrade oversaw. The Catalonian artist Juan Villaplana was commissioned to create the stained glass windows. And thus, the Museum of Art Nouveau and Art Déco first opened its doors to the public on April 6th, 1995.
